01 Source environment — instructor notes

Timing

Budget 30 minutes on a warm Docker cache and up to 60 minutes on first pull. Start the source stack before the lecture if network bandwidth is shared.

Teaching points

• Keep the two workloads distinct: file logs arrive through Filebeat; the Astronomy Shop arrives through an OTel Collector and Elastic APM Server.
• Ask learners to identify the four ingest pipelines and the ILM policy before moving on.
• The goal is a measured baseline, not merely green containers.

Common failures

• vm.max_map_count is too low on Linux or WSL2.
• Elasticsearch is still starting when bootstrap runs; wait for cluster health and rerun bootstrap.
• A stale Docker volume contains an older partial bootstrap; use the documented cleanup before retrying.

Hard checkpoint

bash validation/check.sh passes, Kibana shows live dashboards, and both document and trace counts increase between two checks. Keep this environment running through module 03.
